Class Exchange: a community platform for teaching and research in dance
Dance Technique with Noelle Chun
November 19th and 26th, 10-11:30am
Fremont Abbey

This is an experiment.
What if we pretended to pick up right where we left off?  Let’s approach class as if we’ve been building an ongoing, life long dance phrase together.  In this enduring relationship, we’re like old pals who say little to express much.  In this way, we’ve allowed language, feedback, and correction to take a backseat to (hopefully) discover new ways to be with others and ourselves.
We’ll improvise with some ideas to warm up (to), and then take the majority of class to learn a detailed phrase influenced by a proclivity to reveal a soft, fluent body.  Without much verbal explication at first.  Then we can talk it to death.  Or not.

Three years in the making.  The work we are doing, particularly with attention, can’t be rushed or forced or simply put upon a dancer. Revelation happens through certain conditions, which are always in a state of flux. While negotiating the moving parts of self and others, one has to muster up the patience for the thing’s surprising arrival or gradual emergence, which can sometimes require one to relinquish expectations of instant gratification.

B.S.T.S. Volume 1: Pairs | Fragments of Time is an evening of scored improvisations consisting of six sound & movement pairings exploring the themes of time and duration. Some pairs will perform a piece over a continuous period of time, while other pairs will perform fragmented sections throughout the evening. Artists will also consider where in the space these uneven time frames will take place. Duration and location are central to each piece, creating an evening of timed environmental compositions.
